The Art and Public Art Strategy 2006 - 2008

Strategy

Charnwood Borough Council has produced a new Arts Strategy which was approved by full council in Feb 2006. This strategy aims to support the council’s main priorities and add to the future wealth, health and regeneration of all our local communities. The strategy sets out the Council’s priorities for the arts in Charnwood over the next two years and was developed following extensive research with local people through the Council’s ‘Citizen Panel’ and with local arts organisations. The Citizens Panel research showed that more than half of the Borough already regularly participate in arts activities and that the majority of local people support the Borough’s investment in the arts.

The arts strategy offers a clear framework for the development of the arts in the borough and is in three parts. The first part provides a context and vision for the arts and public art in Charnwood. There is an emphasis on creativity and partnerships in this section which aims to celebrate current strengths and pin point areas for improvement. The second part expands on the vision and has 4 aims and 8 objectives set out within framework of development. The third part identifies the local cultural resources as crucial assets towards developing the arts and public art, and provides an overview of the potential for cultural development across Charnwood.

The strategy will be interesting to different people in different ways but its implementation should benefit Charnwood as a whole. Councillor Jill Vincent, Cabinet Lead Member for Culture said, "We believe that the arts can transform people and places. They make living in Charnwood a more satisfying, rewarding and enriching experience. The new Arts Strategy is intended to help the Council to enable greater access to and participation in the arts and to stimulate improvements in the quality and range of provision that is available. The Council also recognises the importance of working in partnership to make the most effective use of its resources."

A copy of the draft Arts Strategy can be downloaded from the Council’s website or a paper copy can be made available by Contacting the Arts Service.

Opportunities

There are many opportunities for the arts in the Borough of Charnwood, the Strategy is just the starting point. There is already much activity taking place and the aim is to build upon this, to strengthen it and provide more opportunities for people to participate in the arts. If you have any questions, have got any suggestions or need advice on the arts the Arts Officer will be pleased to assist. The Arts Officer's role is to support and encourage arts activity within the Borough and implement the Arts Strategy action plan. The Officer is a resource, to help individuals and groups, to provide information and advice, to increase arts activity in the Borough, to obtain funding, to develop links between organisations and to increase people's understanding of the arts. There will be some projects run directly by the Borough Council, but on the whole it is about co-ordinating, helping others to develop projects.
