Clean up is hailed a success

A MASS clean-up has brightened up Loughborough’s Warwick Way estate – after 11 tonnes of rubbish was cleared from the area in the space of eight hours.
Fifteen wheels, sofas, mattresses, fridges, washing machines and other rubbish that was dumped in the area has all been tidied up during Charnwood Borough Council’s third Environmental Action Day.
Charnwood’s Community Safety Team, Cleansing, Housing and Environmental Health departments were joined by Leicestershire Police and Leicestershire Fire Service’s Arson task Force to tidy up Warwick Way, Milton Street, Rockingham Road, Lewis Road, Knightthorpe Road, Durham Road, Pevensey Road, Byron Street Extension, Shelley Street, Copeland Close and Blake Drive.
Workers from Veolia, who are contracted by the Borough Council to collect Charnwood’s waste, filled two 5.5 ton capacity bin lorries with rubbish.
The teams also discovered an un-taxed vehicle and helped clean up graffiti that had been daubed on buildings on the estate.
Cllr Sandie Forrest, Charnwood Borough Council’s Cabinet member for Community Safety, joined in the clean up and said: “The event was a tremendous success and has brightened up the Warwick Way estate – it certainly looks a lot better.
“This is part of our ongoing commitment to create a Cleaner, Greener Borough and the residents reacted really positively to what we were doing.
“They now have a rubbish-free area that everyone can take pride in.”
Leaflets offering advice on crime and fire prevention plus waste disposal were also handed out to local residents by the two teams cleaning up the area.
Plans are already underway to stage a fourth Environmental Action Day in Charnwood before the end of the year.
