Conservation and Landscape Team
The Conservation and Landscape Team is responsible for the provision of specialist advice and guidance in respect of the conservation and enhancement of the built and natural heritage of the Borough together with the promotion of quality contemporary design solutions. Expertise within the Team covers historic buildings and areas conservation, urban design, landscape design, tree protection and biodiversity.
The Team’s Conservation Officers deal with enquiries about the listing of buildings, appropriate methods of repair and approaches to alteration, historic buildings at risk and possible sources of funding including the possibility of assistance from the Council’s Charnwood Grants Scheme. Working in partnership, Officers contribute to the delivery of environmental improvement and public art projects. These initiatives help to sustain economic vitality and conserve the built environment, and also have benefits for the encouragement of tourism and the creation of quality open spaces. Further important areas of work relate to the implementation of the Loughborough Town Centre Masterplan, the progression of a comprehensive review of the Borough’s 36 Conservation Areas and support for community groups preparing Village Design Statements.
In new development the Team’s Landscape, Trees and Biodiversity Officers are responsible for the negotiation, delivery, monitoring and approval for adoption of high quality landscaping schemes, public open spaces, and natural habitats for wildlife. Officers also manage and control works to protected trees and hedgerows. The effective delivery of these functions is important for the protection of the Borough’s natural environment and ensuring, locally distinctive, sustainable new development; the implementation of the Council’s Green Space Strategy; and the mitigation of the impacts of climate change. In order to safeguard the Borough’s landscape character and biodiversity, the Team has an integral role in the Local Development Framework process and works closely with partners in the delivery of the Leicester, Leicestershire & Rutland Biodiversity Action Plan (or Local Biodiversity Action Plan LBAP), the Local Provenance Seed Collection Project and other initiatives to sustain the natural environment.
