Post-industrial Land

Cinnabar Moth Caterpillar

This consists of naturally vegetated urban areas or industrial sites such as railway land, demolition and derelict sites. The soil is often poor in nutrients and may contain poisons such as heavy metals. The lack of nutrients encourages a diverse flora. The open ground is important for lichens, butterflies, moths, beetles and bees.

These sites are common within the urban landscape and are often close to where people live.

Objectives & targets:

· identify the current extent and management state of important sites by 2005.
· maintain the extent of this habitat and enhance 25% of important sites by positive management by 2005.
