Subject to certain exemptions (see Exempt Buildings and Work, the Building Regulations apply to any of the following:

1. The erection, alteration or extension of a building |
|
2. The provision (but not the identical replacement) of, or alteration or extension of, any sanitary or washing appliance, any hot water storage system, any system of drainage, any combustion appliance or fuel storage system, or certain electrical installations serving dwellings |

3. The provision of any door, window, rooflight, or roofwindow in a dwelling |
|
4. The change of use of a building to a dwelling, flat, hotel or boarding house, institution, theatre, public library, hall or place of public resort, school (certain exemptions apply) or place of public worship |
|
5. The insertion of insulating material into the cavity wall of a building |
|
6. Work involving the underpinning of a building |
