We aim to improve and enforce standards of food hygiene, health and safety in food premises within the borough.

In order to do this, we:

  • Inspect local food businesses to enforce standards of cleanliness and good hygiene practices
  • Investigate complaints about hygiene or contaminated foods (e.g. glass, metal, insects)
  • Randomly sample purchase foods to test the quality and safety
  • Investigate cases of food poisoning
  • Run a National Food Hygiene Rating Scheme in conjunction with other Local Authorities in Leicestershire

Food Enforcement Policy

The purpose of the following document is to state the Authority's general policy with respect to food hygiene and safety law enforcement to business in our area:

The policy is based on the principles of:

  • proportionality (to secure compliance)
  • consistency (of approach)
  • targeting (of enforcement action)
  • transparency (of methods and organisation)

All food hygiene and safety enforcement action will be taken in line with this policy and the Regulators' Code.
