Free Wheels on the Bus for Charnwood

Date of Release: Mon 27th March, 2006

Charnwood Borough Council is pleased to announce that from Saturday (April 1) an improved concessionary travel scheme will mean some bus journey’s will be free across the Borough

The improved scheme, brought in partnership with The Leicestershire District Councils’ Partnership, will mean anyone with a ‘County’ pass will be able to travel completely free of charge within Charnwood (after 9.30am Mondays to Fridays and all day weekends and bank holidays) and will still be able to travel anywhere in the county for half-fare. Half fare will also be available on trains between Nottingham and Loughborough and within the County.

“There’s no April Fool joke with this, and there are no catches as long as you follow the rules", says Cllr Max Hunt, Leader of the Council. "All the details can be obtained either by reading the web www.charnwood.gov.uk/cta or calling in for details at Southfield Council Offices or at local libraries. This is a scheme that's good for the environment, public transport and a gift to older and disabled people."

Existing concession holders will receive a supplementary pass by post within the next few days, which when used with their existing half fare bus pass will enable free journeys to be made. They will also be sent a helpful map guide to where free travel applies together with a plastic wallet to keep both passes in will also be sent to concession holders.

The scheme is contracted by Charnwood to a team at County Hall who were issuing the new passes to existing bus pass holders this week. Existing bus pass holders are being asked not to throw away their old bus passes which will be needed as photo id with their new pass.
