There are a number of people who can help you if you are having problems with a Private Tenancy. If its something that isn't mentioned below, you should contact your Landlord in the first instance, and if they are unable to help contact the Bridge Housing Advice Centre.

The Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) produces a number of booklets about Private Tenancies, which you can read if you want more information. The booklets cover many issues, including what to do if your landlord asks you to leave, and your rights to repair. These can be downloaded from the DCLG Website. Or go to www.communities.gov.uk and search for "booklets for landlords and tenants".

You will normally be an Assured or Assured Shorthold tenant if your landlord does not live in the property with you and you moved in after 14th January 1989.

My Landlord has Asked me to Leave

If your landlord has asked you to leave there are a number of booklets available from the DCLG website including "my landlord wants me out: protection against harassment and unlawful eviction" and "Notice that you must leave: a brief guide for landlords and tenants." These can be downloaded from the DCLG Website. Or go to www.communities.gov.uk and search for "booklets for landlords and tenants".

You should also contact Housing Needs or the Bridge Housing Advice Centre for advice on your rights to remain in your property and to find out whether the notice your landlord has given you is correct. Even if you have received papers from the Court you should still get advice as to whether your notice is correct as you may be entitled to remain in your property.
