LAST CHANCE TO REGISTER TO VOTE
Date of Release: Tue 17th April, 2007
RESIDENTS in Charnwood are being warned that believing urban myths about electoral registration could mean they miss out on the chance to vote in next month’s Borough Council elections.
The 2007 Local Elections take place on Thursday 3rd May and are the most important way to make local voices heard.
Tomorrow (Wednesday 18th April) is the last chance for people to make sure they are on the electoral register and eligible to vote.
You are not automatically registered, even if you pay Council Tax, and providing information is required by law from those eligible to vote – namely UK, EU and Commonwealth citizens.
Roger Titterton, Charnwood Borough Council’s Electoral Registration Officer, said: “Local politics affects all of us in our everyday lives from recycling to the local leisure centre.
“If you haven’t registered to vote in the local elections, then you won’t have a say on the issues that affect you.
“There are many well-established myths around registering to vote but the golden rule is to simply fill in a registration if you are not already registered and return it to us to secure your vote, your voice, at election time.”
If you haven’t received, or been included, on the household form that was sent last autumn, you need to urgently contact Electoral Registrations.
Call them on (01509) 634 612, email electoral.services@charnwood.gov.uk, download a copy of the form from our website at www.charnwood.gov.uk/democracy/electoralregister.html or pop into Charnwood Borough Council’s Southfields offices.
