Introducing the Play Rangers!

Young people in Charnwood are to benefit from an exciting new mobile play project.

The Charnwood Mobile Play Project, funded by the Big Lottery Children’s Play Initiative Programme, will deliver free open access play activities for youngsters up to the age of 16 and their families throughout the borough.

To deliver the mobile play project, Charnwood Borough Council have successfully appointed two play rangers - Peter Thorpe and Rachel Forbes.

Peter and Rachel will be responsible for providing a wide range of play opportunities in a variety of settings including parks and open spaces, village halls, community centres and street settings.

They are now delivering a full Programme spanning across the Borough, visiting places and showing those that turn up the wide range of play opportunities on your doorsteps.

Peter and Rachel have been visiting local community groups and schools to consult with Charnwood youngsters.

The mobile play project will deliver a range of exciting open access drop in play sessions both structured and informal.

Sessions will include both passive and physical play activities such as dance to music, sports, physical activity, arts and crafts, drama, nature-based play, play days, nature trails, story telling, soft play activities, team games and much more.

Cllr Jane Hunt, Charnwood’s Champion for Play, welcomed the appointment of Peter and Rachel and added: “The Big Lottery Children’s Play Initiative Funding will enable us to offer some really exciting and innovative play opportunities for young people across the Borough. I hope the mobile play rangers will make a real difference to the lives of Charnwood’s children and young people.”

Leisure Services would love to hear from anyone who can help to create positive opportunities for children. If you are part of a group or agency that could help the Council to deliver the kinds of opportunities discussed above, please contact Peter or Rachel on (01509) 634836 or email leisure@charnwood.gov.uk

INTRODUCING THE PLAY RANGER'S

Hi, Pete here! We have already enjoyed fantastic play days in the Easter holidays and that has made us even more excited about getting out into Charnwood with the Play Rangers tour.

I’m a really big sports fan, and love football and golf most of all, I am really excited about the range of opportunities we are able to offer and I really feel there is something for everyone right through the age range were working with.

The open play sessions in parks have already started fantastically with lots of children and parents turning up. I think they work because that are designed by the best people for the job, those who turn up, we bring the kit and you decide what to do with it!

The movie makers club is brilliant! I am even getting to make a movie myself to learn what’s needed, the guys involved are great and will ensure its going to be fantastic right to the gala screening at leicester odeon!

Hi, Rachel here!

I’m so excited about the toddlers groups like mini movers as well as the chance to get into schools and offer great play opportunities.

I’m looking forward to the photography sessions and love that our website will soon be full of pictures that young people took while enjoying the Play Rangers tour!
