PUBLIC ARTS IN CHARNWOOD
The Borough Council adopted its Public Art Strategy in May 1998. Public Art is usually visual art, in public places, such as public parks and village centres. The obvious example is sculpture but other examples include street furniture (such as benches, bins, signs and lighting), the design of a paved area, a mural or a stained glass window.
A piece of public art will involve an artist, it will be designed for the site in which it is placed, it creates a sense of identity and is openly accessible to all. Examples within the Borough already are "The Athletes" on Ashby Road, Loughborough, "The Sock" in the Market Place, in Loughborough, the Sileby Mosaic, the Cross, Swan and Knight at Mountsorrel and the Serpentine Bench in Watermead Country Park. The Borough Council is keen to develop further pieces of public art. If you have a proposal or want help then please contact the Arts Officer.
