Mayor’s Sport and Arts Appeal breaks the record!
Popular Councillor, Mike Jones, today thanked the people of Charnwood for helping him to raise a record amount of money for his Mayoral Charity Appeal.
Donations flooded in throughout his civic year giving him a record breaking £11,705 to distribute in grants to local groups putting on sporting and arts activities.
Councillor Jones broke with tradition by choosing to administer his own fund awarding small grants to local community groups rather than presenting an end of year cheque to an established charity. He said "Although there are lots of deserving causes the money could have gone to I wanted to ensure that this locally raised money was spread about locally so that the contributors can see exactly where every penny has gone. We have already awarded £9055 in grants to over 30 local organisations funding such diverse events as film screenings, clowns performing at Loughborough Hospital, the purchase of team kit to launch a girls football club and paid for a St Georges Day meal and dance at an old folks home."
Grants of up to £250 for arts performances and sporting activities will remain available whilst there is still money in the pot and local groups are encouraged to apply quickly.
Application forms and further information can be obtained by contacting the Mayor’s Office on Loughborough (01509) 634602 or email mayor@charnwood.gov.uk.
Councillor Roger Wilson, who took over as Mayor on 16th May will be launching his charity appeal next week. "The Mayor’s Appeal for Glebe House" reflects Councillor Wilson’s long standing personal involvement with the support centre for local people with learning disabilities.
