Date of Release: Wed 6th July, 2005
Council Leader Cllr. Max Hunt described the atmosphere as he and colleagues from Loughborough University gathered on the University campus to hear the results of the International Olympic Committee’s deliberations, live from Singapore as “electric”.
“The announcement was made at 12.46 and everybody in the room was on tenterhooks. When the International Olympic Committee president said, ‘London’ there was an enormous cheer. I think for many of us the emotions were half surprise and half elation. Now of course the work starts both for the University and for Charnwood itself. One thing is for certain and that’s this is good for the Borough.”
Cllr. Bob Feeney the Cabinet lead member for Leisure said, “This is terrific news for the Borough and Loughborough in particular. Our sporting heritage and the sports facilities around Charnwood are second to non in Leicestershire and we fully expect one of the big international teams to set up their training base here. For our young people there will be the opportunity to experience the Olympic spirit at first hand… and that really is what this is all about.”
