BOOK OF CONDOLENCE OPENS FOR VICTIMS OF LONDON BOMBINGS
Date of Release: Tue 12th July, 2005

Charnwood Borough Council has opened Books of Condolence following the co-ordinated terrorist attacks carried out in London on Thursday 7 July.
On Monday 11th July, the Mayor of Charnwood, Cllr Roger Wilson met with other faith, community and civic leaders from Charnwood’s wider community to sign their messages to the victims of the London attacks.
First to sign the book was the Mayor of Charnwood, Councillor Roger Wilson, he said: "I have been absolutely and wholly appalled by this dreadful chain of events and I find the actions of the individuals responsible for the explosions across London both sickening and deeply disturbing. On behalf of Charnwood Borough Council and the citizens of this borough, I would like to express our heartfelt sympathy for the victims of these horrific attacks and to extend our thoughts to the families and friends of those who have been killed or injured. Events such as these aim to tear down communities and make them unstable. Our people and our visitors will sign the Books of Condolence to demonstrate their solidarity with those affected and to send a message to those responsible for this barbaric act that they will not succeed in creating disharmony and unrest in our communities."
Cllr. Peter Lewis, Chair of the Charnwood Racial Equality Council said, "Here, we do not believe there's any place in our community for such twisted and dangerous fantasies. We must now be vigilant on behalf of each other, mindful we're all each other's neighbour. Let us defeat those who would rip us apart by standing together and affirming our shared belief in the fellowship of every one of us. Fellowship is life. Lack of fellowship is death. Living and working, we'll not be torn apart by bombs or bigots."
The Books of Condolence are located at the main Reception of the Southfields Road Council Offices in Loughborough and in Loughborough Town Hall. The books will be available for signing in Southfields between office hours of 9am and 5pm. The Town Hall is open from 8am to 5.30pm .The Books of Condolence will remain open for the foreseeable future. The Books will then be sent to Ken Livingston, the Mayor of London on behalf of the borough.
