New Visitors Centre for Country Park

Date of Release: Tue 19th July, 2005

Charnwood Borough Council has granted planning permission for a major information and educational centre at Watermead Country Park.

The Watermead Centre will be a focal point for visitors to the park and will be used by a local charity called Mosaic to promote disability issues. Facilities will include exhibition spaces, sailing for disabled people, classrooms, bike, buggy and wheelchair hire and a cafe overlooking the lake.

The project is a partnership between the County Council, Mosaic and Charnwood Borough Council and will be partly funded by contributions from Raynsway Limited, secured by the Council as a result of the hotel development that is taking place on the site of the former Wanlip Country Club.

Council Lead Member for Partnerships and Customers Services, Cllr. Jill Vincent said, “The partnership between Charnwood Borough Council, Mosaic and Leicestershire County Council provides the opportunity to realise the long held aspiration to provide a visitor centre within Watermead Country Park and secure improved facilities for people with disabilities”.

Local Councillor for Syston West, Dave Houseman welcomed the scheme saying, “I fully support this development. It clearly demonstrates the commitment by both councils to help the disadvantaged wherever possible."
