Date of Release: Tue 19th July, 2005

Charnwood Borough Council’s long awaited summer activity programme sponsored by AstraZeneca R & D Charnwood and the Loughborough Echo kicked into action this week. The programme for all Charnwood youngsters aged 5 – 16 years, is part of the Councils ongoing strategy to promote and provide sport and leisure opportunities for all by encouraging active and healthy lifestyles among the Boroughs younger residents.
Councillor Bob Feeney, the Cabinet Lead Member for Leisure and Recreation comments
‘It is fantastic to see the first week of the Council’s Summer Activity Programme has attracted so many youngsters. Through the provision of a diverse range of activities under the guidance and support of qualified coaches, we hope that many more youngsters will benefit from participating in healthy sport and leisure opportunities. We hope that these youngsters will carry on to develop their skills and interests once the holidays have finished, and who knows, with the success of winning the London 2012 Olympic bid our Charnwood youngsters maybe our superstars of tomorrow!”
During the first week the Council’s sport and leisure team travelled around the borough leading the old favourite activity “Sports Roadshow” for 5 - 11 year olds. Youngsters had the chance to try a variety of sports and games. Wild card members had the added benefit of being able to take part in the Sports Roadshows FREE OF CHARGE!
Although activities are booking up fast, there are still places left on activities offered next week. For those not scared of a challenge, the popular and exhilarating climbing activity on Monday 25 July will push 8 – 16 year olds to their limits. For 12 – 16 year old anglers, a day out at Broome Angling Society Lake in Frisby on Friday 29 July is just the ticket. Participants can receive expert tuition from one of the Countries National Coaches. Bait for the day is provided free of charge, however anglers are required to bring their own rod.
For those 10 – 16 year olds wanting to learn how to use a bow and arrow, the Archery sessions taking place at Burleigh Community College, Loughborough on Thursday 28 July, are perfect. Led by a qualified instructor, participants will also learn a bit about competitive archery.
The second trip of the summer sees a visit to Tamworth Snowdome on Tuesday 26 July for 11 – 16 year olds. The trip includes a 55-minute skiing lesson and a go on the 170-metre real snow toboggan run. Transport to the Snowdome and lunch is provided. The cost of the trip is £23, however, if youngsters have a Wild card they can receive up to a half price discount!
Sara Meikle, the Council’s Community Leisure Development Officer says,
“The Wild Card is also a must have item for this year. Members will receive 25% discount on all Charnwood Borough Council activities, and youngsters who receive free school meals can save 50%. Many activities are even FREE to Wild card members. At only £3 per year, it is the ticket to great experiences at fantastic prices all year round.”
