Medal Winners Spurred on by Charnwood
Date of Release: Wed 22nd March, 2006
Charnwood Borough Council is getting behind Commonwealth league table toppers and committing to continue bringing sport and active recreation to everyone across the Borough.
Leader of the Council, Councillor Max Hunt, commented: “Loughborough has a fantastic sporting heritage and it’s excellent that so many of people from the Borough and University have been so successful at the Commonwealth Games.
“If Loughborough was classified as a country in the Games, we’d be sixth in the medal table, topping Cyprus, Pakistan and 20 others – what an achievement!
“And now with the approval for the Charnwood Sport and Action Recreation Alliance (CSARA), we will be working with partners from across the Borough, to continue making sports and recreation accessible for everyone, and hopefully assisting in making more medal winners for the future.”
Once the CSARA Strategy is completed in November, Operational and Steering Groups will guide plans to fulfilment. The steering group will have representatives from youth services, the university, health and private sector interests as well as schools and the Borough Council.
Dr Guy Jackson, Head of Marketing and Development, Sports Development Centre, Loughborough University, added: "University students, athletes from the region, and many local clubs have benefited enormously from the world class sports facilities developed with the aid of Lottery funding at the University.
“At the elite sport performance end of the spectrum these benefits are now being reflected in the spectacular results from our students and locally-based athletes at the Commonwealth Games.
“The University is fully behind the CSARA strategy which should help us to play a role in, and help develop more fully, community sport and wider recreational opportunity in the Borough"
It is proposed that the CSARA launch event in April is used as the springboard event to start the consultation process; further consultation will then be undertaken between April and August with key stakeholders, with a draft Strategy being produced for public consultation during September and October. The aim is to have an adopted Sport and Active Recreation Strategy for Charnwood by November 2006.
