Leader Encourages Charnwood to Have Its Say
Date of Release: Tue 9th February, 2010
The Leader of Charnwood Borough Council, Cllr. Mike Preston, is asking everyone in Loughborough, Barrow and Quorn to take part in Leicestershire County Council’s ‘Building Schools for the Future (BSF)’ consultation.
Cllr. Mike Preston said: “We want Loughborough to be seen as a ‘learning community’. To raise Loughborough’s profile as a university town and now potentially a town with new secondary schools offering wider and up-to-date curriculum choices, state-of-the-art IT and new purpose built buildings which will make them among the best to be found anywhere in the UK.
“And on leaving school, we want to see far more of our young people going to university. At the moment only about 23% go on, compared with 45% nationally. In a town that has one of the country’s leading universities!
“We must significantly improve our post-16 education and ensure our young people here are up to speed in skills and knowledge. Part of the proposals include a new University Technical School, specialising in engineering and in sport.
“I fully support this transformational initiative because it is not simply about school education – which is the County’s responsibility. It’s about the whole of life in our community both in and around Loughborough. It’s about our young people growing up to feel part of a vibrant lively town, not just a collection of neighbourhoods, streets and supermarkets.
“We will only get the £80 million on the condition that people respond positively to the consultation. So it’s up to all Loughborough, Barrow and Quorn people, young and old, to really make it happen by really showing they want this opportunity to change - not just for now but for a whole new generation yet to come.
“So I’m asking that everyone in Loughborough, Quorn and Barrow let the County Council hear their views. Do it personally by visiting the County website, or filling in the available response forms.”
