What is a sustainable school?

A Sustainable School is defined by the govenrment as one which:

Promotes a commitment to care for oneself, for each other and for the environment itself

Has embedded sustainable living into the school’s curriculum, values and engagement with the local community

Has put in place practices that lead to a better quality of life for present and future generations

Becoming a sustainable school

Schools can begin by assessing their practices in the following areas:

  • Food & Drink
  • Energy & Water
  • Travel & Traffic
  • Purchasing & Waste
  • Buildings & Grounds
  • Inclusion & Participation
  • Local Wellbeing
  • Global Dimension

Involving the whole school

To ensure that the whole school network is committed to sustainability, schools can

  • Allow the sustainability agenda to be driven by pupils
  • Create an action plan
  • Monitor and measure your progress
  • Promote your achievements

What about Eco-schools?

ECO SCHOOLS LOGO’Eco-Schools’ is a UN endorsed international award programme that guides schools to becoming sustainable. Joining the Eco-Schools programme is free and once registered, schools follow a simple seven-step process which addresses environmental themes in a way that meets national priorities such as the DCSF Sustainable Schools Strategy and Every Child Matters Agenda.
