Community Sports Coaches Scheme
The Community Sports Coaches Scheme, funded by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, was set up in 2004 to establish 3000 paid, qualified Community Sports Coaches working at a local level to increase the range of coaching opportunities across the UK by 2006.
The scheme aimed to increase the number and range of coaching opportunities and meet local needs that will result in an increase in the number of qualified coaches, a high quality level of coaching with a focus on young people, and will enhance the quality of existing activity as well as generate new activity.
Thanks to additional funding from the DCMS, Longslade Community College, Burleigh Community College, Loughborough Extended Schools Service, Barrow Extended Schools Team and Charnwood Borough Council, the scheme has been extended for for 12 months and there will be two Community Sports Coaches in post to:
• Increase the number of young people actively participating in sport and active recreation
• Develop and mentor young sports leaders
• Develop links between schools and sports clubs
• Develop and improve young people’s skill levels.
