Disability Facilities Grants

semi for phousingDisabled Facilities Grants

Disabled Facilities Grants are available to modify a dwelling to restore independent living or to make it possible or easier for a carer to look after another person.
Grants are subsidised by the CLG (for Communities and Local Government).

Work which can be grant assisted would depend on a recommendation from Leicestershire County Council Social Services and must fall within the defined list of Mandatory Grants, which can be viewed by clicking on the link below.

Typical adaptations include

  • Provision of a stair lift to make access to your bedroom or bathroom safe
  • Provision of a shower or safe bathing facilities
  • Providing ground floor facilities where the existing cannot be reached
  • Ramping to front doors and door widening to make wheelchair use safe

Grants are means tested and subject to a maximum award of £30,000. We can carry out a Preliminary Means Test to help you decide if grant assistance might be available. This form is normally provided when your Occupational Therapist visits you.

There are some benefits that are referred to as 'passport' benefits. This means that as you are already in receipt of a benefit where you have provided financial information, we do not need to duplicate that process. If you are in receipt of one or more of the following benefits, you do not need to complete the form. Please note that if we are unable to confirm this, you may need to provide documantry evidence.

Income Support or
Income Based Job Seekers Allowance Income Based Employment Support Allowance Guaranteed element of Pension Credit
Child Tax Credit where the assessed income is less than £15,050
Working Tax Credit where the assessed income is less than £15,050
Housing Benefit
Council Tax Benefit

If the work is for a child or young person (up to the age of 19 where child benefit is in payment), then you do not need to complete a form.

If you do have to provide the your details and need help completing this form, please call us on the number below or click on the link for guidance notes. It is also worth noting that if you have any contribution towards the work, the work required costs more than the maximum grant amount, or you are having extra work undertaken that cannot be included in a grant scheme, you will have to pay the money directly to the contractor.

If you are unable to pay your contribution towards the works (not including any additional work you are undertaking), Social Service may be able to help. You should speak to your Occupation Therapist to find out more information.
