Around the world, from London to Sydney, Toronto and Singapore, people across the world will be joining us at 8.30pm on 26 March 2011 to switch off their lights for one hour. By doing so, they’ll show they care about tackling climate change, protecting the natural world and it’s a message to world leaders that they need to take action to tackle climate change. We hope you can join us.
Last year over 120 local authorities in the UK took part and we want to increase this number in 2011. There are a number of ways that your Council could become involved in WWF’s Earth Hour. Here are some ideas:
· register at WWF's Earth Hour to officially register your support
· consider turning off the lights in your Town Hall, Civic Centre and other landmarks
· encourage your local residents, schools, community groups and businesses to get involved
· organise an event to which members of your community could be invited
· promote the initiative to Council staff, partners, suppliers and networks.
WWF believes that Councils have a vital leadership role to play in what is now a corporate issue for you, not only by reducing your own carbon emissions but also by engaging and raising awareness of climate change with your local community, businesses and public bodies.
A free support pack is available for registered local authorities. There are also support packs for schools, community groups and businesses, as well as lots of ideas for how families and friends can make the most of WWF's Earth Hour.
Find out the history behind WWF’s Earth Hour and how it started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia and has grown to be the biggest globl sustainability movement, now reaching 1.3 billion peopl.
We very much hope that your group will join us. Register now.
