Environmental Health Services

The Environmental Health Department in the Directorate of Housing and Health provides some of the council’s most significant customer facing service areas.

Environmental Health comprises three core teams

The Commercial Team, covers food safety/hygiene, and combines prevention and education as well as enforcement role, to safeguard standards across food establishments of all types and sizes and a service to investigate outbreaks of infectious diseases. Health and Safety, particularly partnership working with the HSE, is another key role for this team in seeking to ensure safe working conditions within the borough. The team also provides a range of other vital duties including pest control, dog control & animal welfare.

The Environmental Protection team is responsible for monitoring air quality, noise pollution issues, controlling pollution from industrial processes and identifying and managing contaminated land. Many of the activities of this team go unnoticed, but have a lasting impact on the quality of the environment for residents.

The Private Sector Housing team delivers advice and assistance to private sector residents about housing conditions. The team allocates grants for those who are disabled and require repairs or adaptations to their homes. The team also administers the private sector assistance policies to other vulnerable households in need. The requirement to meet the Decent Homes standard in the private sector for vulnerable households by 2010 is the responsibility of this team, as well as health, safety, and fitness standards in HMO’s, and energy efficiency measures.

In March 2006 we adopted a policy which was endorsed by Charnwood Councillors outlining how we go about using the enforcement powers vested in us. All officers within the Environmental Health Service need to apply the principles of the policy when they are carrying out their duties. We also have specific policies relating to our food safety and health and safety at work functions
