Charnwood Borough Council has considerable responsibilities toward the local environment. Moreover it has long been acknowledged that a global issue such as climate change must be addressed at the local as well as the national and international level.
These responsibilities result from the Council being a major employer, land and property owner and provider of services. It is also a significant purchaser within the local economy, as well as a leading grant-maker and facilitator of community initiatives.
In order to manage these responsibilities Charnwood Borough Council operates an Environmental Management System (EMS). The EMS will help the Council to manage and reduce the environmental impact of its activities and the services it delivers. The Council's EMS has been accredited with the international environmental management standard ISO14001.
The EMS is being introduced across the Council's sites and services with three of the Council's sites initially seeking certification under ISO14001. These sites are the Council Offices at Southfields, Loughborough Town Hall and South Charnwood Swimming Pool at Syston.
The borough council has developed and adopted an environmental policy which sets out its commitments both in respect of its own activities and, where appropriate, in its influence on the wider community.
A copy of the policy can be downloaded below.
Environmental Management Systems are designed to manage those activities which have a significant impact upon the environment. These activities are known as Significant Environmental Aspects. The Council has taken the decision to communicate these aspects for Southfields offices, Loughborough Town Hall and South Charnwood Swimming Pool which have gained certification under ISO14001. The Significant Environmental Aspects list can be downloaded below.
