Greenhouse Gas Emissions
The combustion of fossil fuels is contributing a changing climate. The impact of an organisation contribution to this phenomenon can be measured through its carbon footprint. A carbon footprint is a calculation of the amount of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases that are being emitted to the atmosphere as a result of an organisation’s activities.
Charnwood Borough Council seeks to achieve a year on year reductio against its 2008-09 baseline as set out in its to achieve a year on year reduction in its corporate plan 2009-2012. The carbon footprint calculation deals with three categories of information shown below:
Scope 1 (Direct emissions) Activities owned or controlled by your organisation e.g. emissions from combustion in owned or controlled boilers, owned or controlled vehicles .
Scope 2 (Energy indirect) Indirect emissions as consequence of council activities but not own or controlled by the council. E.g. purchased electricity, heat, steam and cooling.
Scope 3 (Other indirect) Emissions occurring at sources which you do not own or control e.g. business travel, commuting, contractors
The table below summarises the council’s progress in reducing its carbon footprint since 2008-09.
| tonnes CO2 equivalent | 2010-11 | 2009-10 | 2008-09 |
| Scope 1 (Direct Emissions) | 635 | 509 | 704 |
| Scope 2 (Indirect Emissions) | 1592 | 1448 | 1670 |
| Scope 3 ( Other Indirect Emissions) | n/a | n/a | n/a |
| Total Gross Emissions | 2226 | 1957 | 2374 |
| Carbon Offsets | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| Green Tariffs | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| Total Net Emissions | 2226 | 1957 | 2374 |
This shows that the council has made a 6% reduction in its greenhouse gas emissions since 2008-09. For more information on data used to calculate this carbon footprint see
