Street Cafe licences

Under the Highways Act 1980 a licence is required for placing tables and chairs on a public street or pavement. This may apply to cafés, bars, restaurants and other food and drink outlets in the Borough which provide external seating, on the street or pavement, for the consumption of food and drink.

Charnwood Borough Council's Licensing Committee resolved to rescind the policy for Street Café licensing, and place the process with the Leicestershire County Council, who are the Highways Authority for the whole of Leicestershire.

To apply for a street cafe licence you must now make arrangements with Leicestershire County Council. Please telephone Leicestershire Highways on 0116 3050001.

This licence alone does not permit the sale of alcohol. A premises licence issued under the Licensing Act 2003 will also be required from Charnwood Borough Council.
