Local Origin Seed Project

The National Forest

This major initiative to create a vast new forested landscape in the Midlands began in 1995 and is ongoing. It is a unique concept of national importance opening up opportunities to enhance and diversify the landscape, enrich natural habitats, improve recreation and public access, and foster the aims of rural diversification. The overall proposal covers 194 square miles of land in Leicestershire, Derbyshire and Staffordshire, with the eastern margins of the Forest extending into Charnwood as far as The Outwoods and Swithland Wood.

The Local Origin Seed Collection Project

The National Forest Company and the Borough Council established this project in 2002 as a pioneering initiative designed to meet the growing demand for local origin trees and shrubs. The Project Officer has worked with local landowners, seed collectors and commercial nurseries in the East Midlands to create a supply of trees and shrubs of researched local origin for use in local planting schemes.

Charnwood's hosting of the project came to an end in 2009 and the day to day responsibility for the initiative has been transferred to the Sherwood Forest Trust.
