Micro chipping dogs
It's a Dogs Life! At present a collar and tag is a legal requirement for dogs in a public place but it is simply not reliable as it can become lost. From April 2016 new regulations will also require every dog owner to have their dog microchipped.
Microchipping identifies your dog forever, giving it the best possible chance of being returned to your home. It is a quick and painless procedure which involves implanting a tiny chip below the skin in the scruff of the dogs neck. The microchip contains a unique bar code which can be read by scanners used by Dog Wardens and other dog related professionals and provides contact details of the dogs owner.
A microchipping service is offered free of charge to people who re-home a dog from the Council's contract kennels (College Garth Kennels, Hathern) and is also available at a cost of £15.00 for all dogs. The service takes place every Saturday from 10.00 am until 11.00 am, and appointments can be made by telephoning 01509 842327.
In addition all re-homed dogs are eligible for a free training scheme, details available by telephoning the Council on 01509 634628.
