National Food Safety Week
Contact
National Food Safety Week (15-21st June 2009) is an annual event, which aims to increase food hygiene and safety awareness. It is the point in the calendar for highlighting the importance of food safety and the basic principles of food hygiene.
The focus for National Food Safety Week 2009 will be providing food hygiene advice for the over 60s, specifically on the need for correct storage and handling of food in the home to avoid life-threatening food poisoning, due to an abnormal rise in cases of Listeria.
Key messages will centre on practical actions that people can take themselves to reduce the risk of contracting Listeria, for example:
- Keeping fridges at the correct temperature
- Following the storage instructions on food labels
- Using food use-by date, as well as explaining the difference between use-by and best before
Events
It is hoped that the food hygiene and safety team will take part in a road show. The event is due to take place in June and further information will be given when available.
The Food hygiene and safety team will also be involved in delivering information bags to the elderly residents of sheltered accommodation. Useful Websites
