Numbering of New Properties

The numbering of new properties by the Council is carried out under the provisions of Section 64 of the Towns Improvement Clauses Act 1847.

Numbering schemes are implemented once all decisions on any new road names have been completed. In assigning new numbers to buildings, the Council has to ensure that numbering is done, where possible, consistently and in such a way as to minimise the need for renumbering in the future. The following rules are therefore applied:

  • Where one or more buildings are to be erected between existing properties on an existing road, numbers will be assigned that fall between the numbers of the existing properties on either side. Where this is not possible, due for instance to there being no gap in the existing numbering sequence, an existing number suffixed by A, B, C, etc will be utilised. In the case of industrial buildings, the convention Unit A, Unit B etc is often appropriate.
  • Where buildings are to be erected facing on to one or more new roads, numbering will be carried out with respect to the road to which the front door of the property faces.
  • Buildings erected facing on to new through roads will be numbered using the convention odd numbers on the right, even numbers on the left.
  • Buildings erected facing on to new cul-de-sac roads will normally be numbered consecutively with the sequence extending on both sides of the road. Where there is a possibility that the cul-de-sac may at some future time be extended, the odds and evens convention used for through roads is adopted.

Renumbering of Existing Properties

The Council does not have any statutory power to enforce the renumbering of existing properties.

However, it is able to implement the renumbering of properties where the owner agrees. In most cases, such renumberings are carried out actually at the request of the owner, who may be dissatisfied with the present number for some reason. The Council will do this provided that it is in agreement to the particular renumbering.

Any requests for property renumbering should be expressed in writing stating the reason for the request and the new number preferred. See Building Control Contacts for address or email StreetNamingNumbering@charnwood.gov.uk
