To find out how to dispose of items correctly or for a quick reminder on what goes where click on the image.
All the recyclables collected from the kerbside are taken to Leicester Paper Processors. Here, the recyclables are sorted, baled and shipped off to reprocessors to be made into new products.
Recycling Bag Deliveries
From January 2008, the refuse and recycling collectors will be starting to deliver some new-style recycling sacks. Whilst the colours are the same (red for paper and card, green for plastic bottles and food and drinks cans), the red sack will now be made of textured plastic, so that those with visual impairments are better able to identify which sack is which. The green sack will feel smooth, whilst the red sack will have a rougher feel to it.
Deliveries will start in January, but it will be some months before all residents get the new sacks, so they should continue to use their existing supply of red and green recycling sacks in the meantime. Both the red and the green sacks are still being recycled after they’ve been collected, so nothing goes to waste!

Collection Point
The recycling must be left at the edge of your property as shown below (and not on the pavement and not behind a locked gate) and it must be presented by 7am on your collection day.
In addition, you can recycle at one of the waste disposal sites run by Leicestershire County Council.

If you put out recycling that contains materials that cannot be recycled, it will be left for you to put in your wheelie bin or take to the Recycling and Household Waste site.
If you present your box with the lid fitted, the contractor is asked to leave the lid propped inside your box once the recyclables have been collected.
Your recycling is collected by the refuse contractor, Veolia, and taken to Leicester Paper Processors in Coalville. There it is sorted and baled for recycling. Leiscester paper processors is owned by Greenstar.

Can you help me Home Compost?

All vegetable kitchen waste and some garden waste can be broken down into a useful soil conditioner as a substitute for peat. When green waste is landfilled, it breaks down to produce methane, which is a greenhouse gas, so composting helps to reduce this. Home composting, means that you get the first hand benefits of recycling to use on your garden!
Currently the Leicestershire Waste Management Partnership is offering home composting bins for a significantly reduced price. You can obtain these by calling 0845 073 2001. Alternatively, apply now to become a volunteer Master Home Composter and help promote home composting throughout the County. Please see the related documents box at the top of this page for further information.
Green Cone Food Digester Trial
In 2007, 250 volunteers took part in a six-month trial of Green Cone Food Digesters, to see if they were a suitable way of diverting biodegradable waste from landfill sites. Charnwood Borough Council felt this was an important trial to undertake, as when biodegradable waste decomposes in a landfill site, it does so anaerobically, and a by-product of this process is methane, which is a highly potent greenhouse gas. This doesn’t happen in a Green Cone, as the organic matter is exposed to the air. The UK is also running out of space for landfill sites, so we need to find more appropriate ways of dealing with our waste.
The results of the trial were very positive, showing that households can divert around 18% of their total household waste from landfill sites by using a Green Cone, so could be an appropriate method of waste minimisation for residents of Charnwood. Further investigation and trials are planned for 2008-09 before any firm decisions are taken on the use of Green Cones by Charnwood Borough Council.
For more information on the trial, please refer to the Evaluation Report below.
