LOCAL GOVERNMENT ACT 2000 - THE LOCAL AUTHORITIES (REFERENDUMS) (PETITIONS & DIRECTIONS) (ENGLAND) REGULATIONS 2000
These regulations provide for a referendum to be held where at least 5% of the local government electors in a local authority's area petition the authority for a referendum on whether the authority should operate executive arrangements (arrangements involving its future leadership structure) which involve an elected Mayor.
The regulations require the Council to publish the number of electors that is equal to 5% of the number of local government electors in Charnwood's area, shown in the Electoral Register on 15 February 2008. This number (known as the verification number) will have effect for the purposes of determining the validity of petitions presented between 1 April 2008 and 31 March 2009.
The verification number published for the Borough of Charnwood for this period is 6,424 (six thousand, four hundred and twenty four).
The verification number must be ascertained and published annually when an Electoral Register succeeds that of the preceding year.
