Our lives and our future are hugely dependent on the burning of fossil fuels.

Whilst the fossil fuel era has brought great technological changes and allowed us to travel further and faster than any of our ancestors, we are likely to be facing climate chaos within the next 20-50 years if we are unable to control these emissions.

Climate Change grants for communities

How we tackle climate change at Charnwood

We are committed to playing our part in the battle against rising carbon dioxide levels. We are leading by example and hoping to influence planning, development, transport infrastructure, provision of services, the local economy and community initiatives.

By considering the effects of climate change in our own operations we hope to benefit present and future generations. This is why we have created a climate change strategy and action plan and our own carbon management plan.

Having an up to date action plan not only helps us to reduce carbon emissions and become more energy efficient, it also provides us with a framework to report this to our partners and the public. By doing so it encourages others to take action.

Charnwood Renewable and Low Carbon Study

The Charnwood Renewable and Low Carbon Study considered the technical capacity for different types of large scale renewable energy, including wind, solar, biomass, and hydroelectric power. The document is available to view below:

Start2Act Programme

In line with the Council’s carbon plan and climate change strategy we have a commitment to promote low carbon opportunities to the community and businesses. The Carbon Trust are offering free-of-charge one-to-one consulting for SMEs and start-ups support through START2ACT. See the document below for further details:

Climate science

Climate science is still an evolving field but there is an ever-growing trend for cleaner alternatives to fossil fuels as a main energy source. More information on the science of climate change can be found on the website of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Study on the potential for renewable and low carbon energy

This study identifies the amount of renewable energy which could be produced within each district or borough, including Charnwood.

It is very important to point out that this is technical potential, and it does not take into account local landscape or very detailed planning considerations.
