Scrap Metal Dealers & Motor Salvage Operators
Operations involving scrap metal dealing (SMD)and motor salvage operations (MSO) must be registered or licensed with the local authority.
Once licensed, the operators of these sites must keep records relating to movement and sale of materials. The purpose of the licence is mainly to allow steps to be taken to combat vehicle crime and so the powers to enforce the provisions of the law rest with the Police.
Public Registers
A public register of all scrap metal dealers and motor salvage operators is held by the local authority.
Licence Applications
Applications for a SMD or MSO licence must be made to the local authority.
For a SMD there is no fee and the licence lasts for 3 years.
