Services for Older People

The Council operates a number of services providing help and assistance to the elderly. Details of these are listed below.

Supported or Sheltered Housing

Supported Housing provides secure,comfortable, pleasant accommodation and has been designed in two different styles. Some have properties situated in one building connected by communal corridors. For more information visit our Supported & Sheltered Housing area.

Lifeline Service

If you would like to remain in your home but feel you would benefit from some reassurance in an emergency, you can have a Lifeline installed. This service is managed by Charnwood Neighbourhood Housing and more information is available on the Charnwood Neighbourhood Housing website.

National Bus Travel Scheme

Under the National scheme for bus travel everyone over the pensionable age for women (in line with changes to the State Pension Age) and eligible disabled people are entitled to apply for a travel card offering free off-peak bus travel between 9.30am and 11pm Monday to Friday and at all times on weekends and bank holidays, on all local buses anywhere in England.

In addition Charnwood Borough Council is continuing to fund the additional concessions previously offered under the Charnwood Gold Card scheme. These include half fare travel before 9.30am, free bus travel after 11pm (when the National scheme free concession ends), half fare local rail travel at all times, the option to receive travel vouchers instead of a bus pass, and use of community transport schemes. Charnwood Borough Council also continue to offer free travel at all times on local buses and local trains for eligible disabled persons. Leicestershire Handyperson Scheme

In order to assist the over 60's with repairs and maintenance of their homes, the Private Housing team is pleased to announce that Charnwood now forms part of the county wide Leicestershire Handyperson Scheme, run by Mears Home Improvements Ltd.
