Street Parties

The Queens Diamond Jubilee - 2nd to 5th June 2012

The Queen's Diamond Jubilee will take place over an extended weekend from the 2nd to the 5th June 2012.  Holding a street party for such a national occasion has a long tradition which started in 1919 and which 1 million joined in for last year's royal wedding.

Even if not everyone in your street is interested in the Jubilee, a street party is a rare chance to meet with the neighbours and to play with the children together in a traffic free street.  Lots of ideas for activities and help with closing the road, and insurance can be found on the Streets Alive Website

What is classed as a Street Party

  • Event to be attended by residents and neighbours only
  • Party not to be publicised or open to the general public
  • Licences are not normally necessary if music is incidental and there is no selling involved
  • No formal risk assessment is needed
  • Solely organised by, and the responsibility of the local residents' event organiser
  • Ideally held in a cul de sac or quiet street not affecting traffic movement or bus routes

What documentation will I need to provide with my application for a Road Closure?

  • completed application form (See below)
  • map of roads affected
  • plan of proposed street layout
  • simple risk assessment
  • details of signage
  • no public liability insurance needed (although this is recommended - Word Document Insurance Guidance for Street Parties (Word Document, 0.1 Mb)
  • no charge made by CBC for issuing road closure
  • additional guidance from Leicestershire Highways Word Document Guidance Notes - Leicestershire Highways (Word Document, 0.1 Mb)

Charnwood Borough Council do not charge for a Temporary Road Closure under the Town and Police Clauses Act for your event.

Further detailed information can be obtained from the Streets Alive Website, which you will find very useful when planning your Street Party.

What permissions and licences are needed?

A street party will involve closing the street(s) on which the party is being held.  To do this, you need to apply for a Temporary Road Closure at least six weeks before you are planning to hold the event.

You will need a Temporary Event Notice (TEN) if you intend to:

  • hold live performances, film screenings or dancing
  • play live or pre-recorded music for entertainment purposes
  • sell alcohol
  • hold a raffle
  • sell food and hot drinks between 11pm and 5am

There is a small charge of £21 for licenses, and for further details please contact our licensing department at licensing@charnwood.gov.uk or telephone 01509 634562 for further information.

If you have any further queries or require an application form, please contact Lynne Twigg on 01509 634541
