Sustainable Drainage

What Is Sustainable Drainage?

“Sustainable drainage” means managing rainwater (including snow and other precipitation) with the aim of—

(a) mitigating damage caused by flooding by reducing flood volumes and/or flow rates,

(b) improving water quality,

(c) protecting and improving the environment,

(d) protecting health and safety, and

(e) ensuring the stability and durability of drainage systems

Sustainable Drainage is a sequence of management practises and control structures, often referred to as SUDS, designed to drain surface water in a more sustainable fashion than traditional piped systems. Typically, sustainable drainage techniques are used to slow down the rate of flow from development sites, reducing the risk of flooding and erosion.
