Transport Planning

Local transport policies are developed by the County and City Councils in their Local Transport Plans for Central Leicestershire and Leicestershire, and in other documents such as Walking and Cycling Strategies and Rural Transport Action Plans.

Local transport systems make a significant contribution to the social, economic and environmental wellbeing of Charnwood. That is why the Borough Council works with transport users and providers to try and improve all types of key services and facilities - rail and road, public and private - in ways that increase choice and improve accessibility. The aim is to develop integrated, less polluting, safe and accessible transport systems to be proud of.

Road access is generally very good with the M1 running north to south through the Borough and there are some good public transport links including inter urban bus services and frequent train services from Loughborough to neighbouring cities and London. Nottingham East Midlands Airport is about 8 miles to the north of Loughborough.

Despite such advantages many people living in Charnwood have little or no choice of transport some or all of the time, in particular about 20% of households without a car. The Borough Council helps ease some of the problems by supporting reduced rate travel for older people and those with disabilities and by developing initiatives as a member of the Rural Transport Partnership.

This site provides information on a range of transport related activities the Borough Council is involved in.
