One of the most effective ways to avoid sending our waste to landfill is reduce the amount that we create. There are many small and easy ways that we can all do to help reduce the amount of waste we produce and energy we consume and some of these are detailed below:
Switch Expansion
We are happy to announce that after the successful trial of SWITCH, the project will be expanded to 10,400 additional properties. The aim of the project is to help households divert their waste from landfill. Residents on the selected areas will be contacted soon with all the relevant information on how to take part in this new exciting venture. For more information see our Switch Expansion page in the navigation on the right of this page.
Switch Trial
Charnwood Borough Council's exciting new trial aims to find out how we can best help our residents to minimise the amount of waste that they produce. We want to find out which activities, that residents can take part in, are the most effective at diverting waste away from landfill sites. For more information see our Switch Trial page in the navigation on the right of this page.

One third of the food we buy in the UK ends up being thrown away. That is equal to 6.7 Million tonnes of food each year. The Love Food Hate Waste campaign is brought to you by WRAP and offers great advice and information on how we can all reduce our food waste. It's a great campaign and well worth a read

If you don't use it, Freeuse it!
A great new website is giving people the chance to find a hidden treasure or give away items for free. The online Freeuse resource offers a quick and easy way for residents to advertise their unwanted possessions, or search for an item that they could put to good use. The website - put together by the Leicestershire Waste Partnership - is designed to reduce the amount of waste generated by giving old household items a new lease of life. It’s estimated that £5.6 billion pounds worth of good quality usable household items are thrown away in the UK every year.
Visit http://www.freeuseit.org/ for more information and to start giving and taking items for free!
