Shadow Puppets, Dancing Dolls and Tall Stories
Date of Release: Tue 2nd January, 2007
Gypsy story teller David Smith will bring the Thousand Year Story to life at Charnwood Museum on Saturday 20 January with his famous animated shadow puppets. The Shadow Puppet Show will be followed by traditional Gypsy travelling entertainment of tall stories, fiddle playing and the comical dancing dolls.
There is a long tradition of story-telling in Romany Gypsy communities. For hundreds of years they have maintained their own language and traditions through a rich culture of oral history and story-telling handed down from generation to generation. Many Gypsies also made a living as entertainers. The Thousand Year Story tells the history of Gypsy and Traveller communities as they migrated across Europe from north-west India over a thousand years ago.
The Shadow Puppets and Dancing Dolls show will take place on 20 January at 11.00am-11.45am, 1.00pm-1.45pm, 2.00pm-2.45pm and 3.00pm -3.45pm. Tickets for this event cost just £1 per person. Places are limited and tickets will sold on a first come first served basis. Call Charnwood Museum on 01509 233754 to reserve your place.
After the show visitors can also visit “The Thousand Year Story: Gypsies and Travellers in Leicestershire” exhibition currently on display at Charnwood Museum.
Charnwood Museum is run as a partnership between Leicestershire County Council and Charnwood Borough Council.
