We are responsible for regulating nuisance odour arising from the Wanlip sewage treatment works and are aware that the Wanlip site is causing odour problems to nearby residents.

Whilst it would not be possible to eliminate all odours from the sewage treatment works, our Environmental Protection Team is working with the operator, Severn Trent Water to ensure that all measures are in place to minimise these problems.

Routine compliance checks and odour audits are undertaken to ensure that agreed management actions are adhered to.

The Environment Agency is responsible for regulating two waste treatment facilities which also occupy the same Wanlip site. As such, we are also working closely with the Environment Agency to alleviate any potential odour problems from these activities.

Severn Trent Water is keen to demonstrate its commitment to minimise odour arising from the Wanlip site and has undertaken to directly follow up any reports of odour nuisance itself. In-house  odour audits are undertaken on a regular basis in order to identify and address any issues identified.  Odour audit reports are forwarded to Charnwood Borough Council and the most recent of which are available to view below.

Hot-Dry Weather Action Plan - Severn Trent Water 

It is recognised that prolonged hot and dry weather may cause septicity issues in both the sewerage network and the sewage works itself. This can give rise to increased onsite odour events. In anticipation of such, or as informed by an odour audit, a Hot/Dry Weather Action Plan will be implemented to address any such event.
