Answer

1: Is your register of cooling towers in your area up-to-date, and how many cooling towers are currently registered?
Yes as of February 2012 14 premises, 24 cooling towers/evaporative condensers but rely on businesses to notify us if they have installed a cooling tower/ evaporative condenser.

2: How many of these are the council responsible for regulating, and how many are the responsibility of the Health and Safety Executive?
HSE are the enforcing authority for all of the premises currently registered.

3: How many pro-active health and safety inspections have been carried out by the council each year for the past five years regarding legionella risks, or management of legionella risks, at:
a)   cooling towers sites;  not applicable as LA not the enforcing authority
and
b)  other water systems with potential legionella risks?"  We do not have any data but inspecting officers would raise the issue where necessary. This financial year we have targeted an intervention on residential care homes where one of the topics covered is legionella risks and controls
