Organic Household Waste
- Are food and garden waste collected from households?
- What company is contracted to collect organic waste from households?
- Once the organic waste has been collected from the kerbside is it sent to transfer station to bulk loads together?

- What are the start and end dates of this contract?
- What company has this council contracted to compost the organic waste?

Dry Kerbside Recycling
- Are cans, paper, glass, plastics and textiles collected from the kerbside?
- What collection system is used; kerbside sort, single stream commingled or dual stream commingled collection system?
- What company is contracted by the council to collect the dry recycling from the kerbside?
- What are the start and end dates of this contract?
- Once the dry recyclables have been collected from the kerbside, are they taken to a transfer station to bulk loads together?
- If so, what company has this council contracted to run the transfer station?

Answer

Organic Household Waste
- Are food and garden waste collected from households?   Garden waste is collected, but food waste is not, other than in the residual waste collections.
- What company is contracted to collect organic waste from households?  Garden waste is collected by Serco.
- Once the organic waste has been collected from the kerbside is it sent to transfer station to bulk loads together?  No.  It is sent straight to a composting facility.

- If so, what company has this council contracted to run the transfer station?   N/A
- What are the start and end dates of this contract?   N/A
- What company has this council contracted to compost the organic waste?  The composting facility used is run by Biffa at Lount in Leicestershire, under a contract with Leicestershire County Council.  A small amount of organic waste is also sent to Soars Lodge Farm in Foston, Leicestershire.
- What are the start and end dates of this contract?   For information about the contract between Biffa and Leicestershire County Council, please contact Leicestershire County Council.  The contract with Soars Lodge Farm runs from February 2010 until approximately October 2011, with flexibility depending on the letting of a new green waste contract.
- What method of composting is used (windrow composting, in-vessel, anaerobic digestion)?   Wind-row at both facilities.
 
Dry Kerbside Recycling
- Are cans, paper, glass, plastics and textiles collected from the kerbside?   Yes.
- What collection system is used; kerbside sort, single stream commingled or dual stream commingled collection system?   Paper, card, glass, cans, aerosols, foil, plastics and cartons collected in a purple bag; glass bottles and jars in a green box; textiles and household bric-a-brac in a white bag.  17,000 properties are currently eligible for battery collections using a separate bag.  Please note that this system is due to change from 5th September, when a six-week roll-out of wheelie bins for recycling will be carried out.  The contents of the purple bag and green box will then be placed in the green wheelie bin.  The white bag will remain in use, and the battery collections will be expanded to all properties.
- What company is contracted by the council to collect the dry recycling from the kerbside?   Serco.
- What are the start and end dates of this contract?  1st August 2009 to 31st March 2017.
- Once the dry recyclables have been collected from the kerbside, are they taken to a transfer station to bulk loads together?   Yes. 
- If so, what company has this council contracted to run the transfer station?   Currently Greenstar (LPP) in Coalville, Leicestershire, moving to N.H. Skips (under CBC's contract with Viridor) from 1st August 2011.
- What are the start and end dates of this contract?   N.H. Skips are subcontracted by CBC's contractor, Viridor.  Viridor contract runs 1st August 2001 to 31st March 2017.
- If either of the commingled collection systems are used, what company is contracted by this council to run the Material Recycling Facility (MRF)?   From 1st August 2011, it will be Viridor.
- What are the start and end dates of this contract?   1st August 2011 to 31st March 2017.
 
- What companies has this council contracted to take on the materials to be recycled?   The recyclate is collected by Serco and taken on by Viridor.
- What are the start and end dates of these contracts?  Serco: 1st August 2009 to 31st March 2017.  Viridor: 1st August 2011 to 31st March 2017.
 
Recycling/Bring Banks
- Are cans, glass, paper, plastic and textiles collected from the bring banks?   Yes, with the exception of plastic.
- What companies are contracted by this council to collect each of these recyclables from the bring banks? Cans: Alutrade.  Glass: Berrymans.  Paper: Smurfitt Kappa.  Textiles: BHF, Oxfam, Salvation Army, Planet Aid, Traid.
- What are the start and end dates of these contracts?   These are rolling contracts from some years ago, and as such the start dates are unknown.
- What companies are contracted by this council to take on each of these materials once they have been collected?   As above.
- What are the start and end dates of these contracts?  As above.
