Please provide the latest information you have with regard to the whole life impact of your recycling policy on the environment.
For example, how much carbon dioxide is emitted as a result of collections, transport to the sorting centre, onward transport to the companies that make the various materials into something useful.
Also how much of the material collected for recycling is actually recycled, and how much is eventually sent to ground fill and/or incineration. How much carbon dioxide is released as a consequence of this onward transport of unusable materials?
How do these effects compare with simply taking all waste to landfill.
Charnwood Borough Council does not hold any information in relation to emissions from transportation, sorting or incineration of waste and recycling.

In addition to the above, our waste contractor Serco have provided the following statement in relation to the waste fleet: ‘SERCO ensure all vehicles confirm to correct emission standards. This will usually apply when contract specifications for vehicles are tendered by Local Authorities.
As and when vehicles are due for replacement they will meet whatever emission standards apply at that particular time.’
