Question

I would like to request information under the Freedom of Information Act on Charnwood Council's policies in regards to the collection and disposal of deceased animals from roads and public areas. Specifically animals that may be pets.
1) Are animals scanned for a microchip?
2) Is there a policy for contacting owners if there is an ID tag with contact details?
3) Is there a policy for recording details of the collection (description of animal, location, presence of collar)?
4) How are animals disposed of?
5) Are animal remains stored for any period of time to enable owner collection?

Answer

1) Are animals scanned for a microchip?
Yes by our contractors
2) Is there a policy for contacting owners if there is an ID tag with contact details?
Yes, if a tag is on the animal, we'll contact the owner.  If the animal is found to have a microchip, the details are passed on to Pet-Log, who manage the microchip service, and they will contact the owner.
3) Is there a policy for recording details of the collection (description of animal, location, presence of collar)?
A record of tagged animals is kept.
4) How are animals disposed of?
Taken for incineration at MC Waste in Melton
5) Are animal remains stored for any period of time to enable owner collection?
Stored for 7 days if they are chipped to enable contact with owners for collection
