Obtain the keys.
The Officer dealing with the case must have statutory authorisation to enter a property, to ascertain the extent of the estate and to remove any items or assets which may assist in funding the funeral. No unauthorised persons e.g. neighbours, are allowed access into the property.
In order to establish who will be responsible for undertaking the funeral arrangements, a full search of the premises where the deceased person formerly resided, if appropriate, will need to be made to establish whether there are any next-of-kin, whether there is a will, or to trace solicitor details.
If it appears that the council will become involved in undertaking the funeral arrangements, then any items removed from the property, together with keys will need to be stored safely.

If no next of kin can be traced, a cremation will be arranged by the council with the cremated remains being subsequently scattered accordingly by the crematorium, unless, it is established that the religion of the deceased forbids cremation or the deceased expressed a wish, either verbally or written, to be buried. In exceptional circumstances, cremated remains may be given into the care of a family member/friend or will be re-united with the remains of a previously deceased close family member (wife/husband).  The funeral director will be informed of any financial limitations at an early stage, when arranging a funeral.
