Question

I would like to know whether it is a legal requirement to pay council tax if I am living in Loughborough. Please could you give a clear 'yes' or 'no' answer followed by any relevant explanation and laws which support the 'yes' or 'no' response.

Answer

There is a legal requirement for all persons to pay Council Tax in respect of any domestic property for which they hold liability. Liability is usually associated with residence in a property, but can relate to property ownership or lease, where a property is unoccupied.
Charnwood Borough Council is responsible for billing and collecting all Council Tax within the Borough, which includes properties in Loughborough.
