I would like to make a Freedom of Information request please about planning applications made by the main supermarkets Sainsburys, Morrisons, Waitrose, Tesco, Co-Op, Iceland, Lidl, M&S and Aldi, and/or developers working for them to get planning permission for their supermarket stores.
For the last five years may I please have a list of:
i) A list of approved planning applications relating to proposed supermarkets. For each please give the name of the applicant and supermarket chain, the location, the planning reference number, and the floor size of the store building (in square foot).
ii) For each, please provide a breakdown showing if subsequent planning applications were submitted to modify the floor size of the store building, the modified floor size of the store building (in square foot applied for, and the status of the application to modify (for example, but not limited to: awaiting decision, approved but pending/incomplete, approved and built/complete, approved but withdrawn).
And can you please provide the information in a table if possible. An example of how the table might look is below:

However while the information requested may be held by the Council in the form of individual planning applications it is not held in a manner which enables the information you requested to be collated easily. The time required to locate and retrieve the requested information would exceed the appropriate limit for dealing with requests set out in section 12 of the Act and the Appropriate Limit and Fees Regulations.
We do not record the name of the supermarket chain, as who the supermarket is operated by is not a planning issue.
To locate the information requested, we would firstly have to identify the sites, then the specific applications, then measure the plans and finally check whether the development had been completed. Unfortunately there is no standard search for supermarket developments and each application is described only to identify the development not just one feature of that development.
The Council would normally wish to offer suggestions as to how some of the information could be provided or how a differently worded request could result in information being provided within the terms of the Act and the Regulations. However due to the complexity of the information requested in this case in relation to the way in which the Council holds information this does not appear possible in this case.

Each application also provides related documents, so measurements could be obtained via the submitted plans, once relevant applications has been identified.
