Free activities, support and information will be on offer at an event as part of Dementia Awareness Week.
The ‘Celebrating Choice’ event has been organised by Charnwood Borough Council in partnership with AGE UK, as part of Dementia Awareness Week from May 15-19.
It will be held on Friday, May 19 at John Storer House, Loughborough from 10am-12.30pm.
Activities include seated exercises, Singing for the Brain, a sensory stroll and hanging basket planting demonstrations.
The event is being held to show to people with dementia and their families the type of activities that are on offer in Charnwood.
Paul Gill, 68 from Groby, Leicestershire was diagnosed with dementia in 2012. He said: “After my diagnosis the feedback from my physiotherapist was that my balance was affected.
“I needed to try and improve my balance, because if I have a fall it can be serious for someone with dementia.
Paul joined a Dementia Exercise Class organised by the borough council in December 2016.
He said: “The physiotherapy and exercise classes have led to obvious and demonstrable improvements and I hope others can be encouraged to benefit too.”
Mat Richardson, Community Sport & Physical Activity Development Officer said: “We want to be able to provide opportunities for everyone to take part in sport in Charnwood.
“These exercise classes are specifically for people with dementia and incorporate the use of the gym equipment and facilities.
“We aim to deliver small, friendly sessions which are tailored for the needs of the participants.”
The sessions are held every Friday at Loughborough Leisure Centre from 11.30am and cost £3 per session. Participants must be accompanied by a friend or carer.
Activities at the Celebrating Choice event will be:
- 10am: Registration
- 10.30-11am: Chair Based Exercise
- 11.15-11:45am: Singing for the Brain
- 12-12:30pm: Sensory Stroll
