A Charnwood Borough Council spokesman said: “Our thoughts are with everyone affected by the incident in Birstall.
“Earlier today we set up a recovery centre in Birstall Parish Council offices in Birstall Road and just over 30 people affected by the incident have been there today. They have been provided with refreshments and we would like to thank everyone in the community who has dropped by to help out by giving food and drink. The community have really rallied around to support those affected.
“We now know several properties will be uninhabitable for several days. Charnwood Borough Council is working with other agencies including Leicestershire County Council to ensure people can access temporary accommodation should they need it.
“This is an ongoing incident and we will keep people updated. Clearly it has been an upsetting experience and we are doing everything we can to help those affected.”
